Trapped nerve treatment in Bristol that takes the pressure off
The nerve isn't the problem. What's pressing on it is.
Pain, tingling, numbness or weakness that travels down your arm or leg. What's commonly called a trapped nerve is a nerve under compression. The nerve is giving you the signal. Something next to it is causing the compression: a restricted joint, a disc under pressure, a muscle pressing against the nerve's path. We find what's compressing it and take the pressure off. Trapped nerve treatment in Bristol
The term is misleading. The nerve isn't trapped. It's being compressed by a structure next to it.
A joint that has lost its normal movement and is now encroaching on the space the nerve needs, a disc pressing against the nerve root, or a muscle tightened enough to press against its path. The nerve responds by sending signals along its entire length, which is why the pain, tingling, numbness or weakness is felt far from the actual source.
Most people are told to rest and take painkillers. Sometimes the symptoms ease. What that doesn't tell you is whether the compression has resolved or whether the nerve has simply become less reactive. If the cause hasn't been addressed, the symptoms will return. Compression in the cervical spine refers into the shoulder, arm and hand. Compression in the lumbar spine refers into the buttock, leg and foot. The symptoms are in the limb. The cause is in the spine.
At Willow, we establish what is compressing the nerve and where, then address that directly. Removing the compression is the only thing that reliably resolves the symptoms.

Evidence-based care for trapped nerves
Chiropractic is one of the most effective approaches for nerve compression because it addresses the mechanical cause directly.
At Willow, we combine thorough clinical and neurological assessment with targeted treatment to identify the source of the compression and take the pressure off the nerve.
How chiropractic care can help trapped nerves
Trapped nerves look different for everyone
Our focus is simple: identify what is compressing the nerve, restore the movement or space the nerve needs, and take the pressure off. Because symptoms that travel along a nerve have a source, and the source can be found. You might be experiencing:
- Sharp, burning or electric pain that travels down the arm or leg
- Tingling or pins and needles in the hand, fingers, foot or toes
- Numbness that comes and goes, or stays
- Weakness in the arm, hand, leg or foot
- A shoulder, neck or back that triggers the symptoms when it moves in certain directions
- Symptoms that are worse at night or in specific positions
- An arm or leg that feels heavy or unreliable
When should you see a chiropractor for a trapped nerve?
You should see a chiropractor if:
- Symptoms are travelling into your arm, hand, leg or foot
- You have numbness, tingling or weakness alongside the pain
- Rest and painkillers have helped temporarily but symptoms keep returning
- Symptoms have been present for more than a few weeks
- You want to know what is actually compressing the nerve, not just manage the signal it's sending
The nerve is telling you something is wrong. Let's find out what.

A trapped nerve is the arm that goes numb in the night and needs shaking awake
Dropping things without meaning to. The burning that runs from your neck into your hand that no position seems to ease. The electric sensation that comes without warning. Not knowing which movement will set it off. Typing becoming difficult. Carrying bags on one side becoming impossible. The leg that gives way without warning on the stairs.
What happens at your first trapped nerve appointment?
Your first visit is a proper assessment, designed to establish exactly what is compressing the nerve and where. Nerve symptoms require a thorough neurological assessment, not just a general examination. You'll get:
- A detailed history of your symptoms and how they behave
- Neurological testing to map the pattern of the symptoms
- Orthopaedic testing to identify the source of the compression
- A thorough examination of the cervical or lumbar spine
- A postural assessment
- X-rays, if clinically required
- A clear explanation of what's compressing the nerve and why
- Straight advice on what we can do and what the plan looks like
For many patients, the first assessment is the first time the source of their symptoms has been properly located rather than treated generically.
91% of Willow patients feel better with regular chiropractic care.

Why our approach is different
By the time most people reach us, they've followed the standard route. The GP prescribed painkillers and advised rest. Perhaps a referral for a scan, and a wait of several weeks. The symptoms eased a little, or a lot, and then came back. Some people have been through this cycle several times.
There's a reason that sequence doesn't resolve it. Painkillers reduce the pain signal the nerve is sending. They don't change what's pressing on the nerve. Rest reduces the load on the spine temporarily. When normal activity resumes, the compression returns. The nerve is still in the same position relative to whatever is irritating it. The symptoms come back because nothing structural has changed. What we're looking for:
- Which joint or disc is creating the compression and at what level of the spine
- How much space is available for the nerve and what is reducing it
- Whether the compression is from a disc problem, a joint problem, or both
- What in your posture, movement or daily habits is maintaining the pressure on the nerve
Once the source is identified, treatment is targeted directly at restoring the space and movement the nerve needs. Most patients notice a meaningful reduction in symptoms within the first few visits.
You don't have to keep waiting for it to settle on its own.
