Pregnancy chiropractic care in Bristol
Most people are told some version of the same thing: it's part of being pregnant, it will pass after the birth, take paracetamol and rest. Some are given a support belt. Very few are offered an explanation of what is actually causing the pain, or told that it can be addressed.
Pregnancy changes the mechanics of the entire musculoskeletal system. The centre of gravity shifts forward as the bump grows, increasing the load on the lumbar spine. Relaxin causes ligaments throughout the pelvis to become more lax, reducing joint stability. The pelvis widens to prepare for birth, changing how weight is distributed through the hips and lower back. These are specific, structural changes, and the pain they produce has a cause.
Chiropractic care is safe throughout all three trimesters and is specifically adapted to each stage of pregnancy. Pain in pregnancy is not inevitable. It is mechanical, and at Willow, that is exactly where we start.

Evidence-based care for pregnancy-related pain
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is safe, gentle and well-evidenced.
At Willow, our chiropractors are trained in the assessment and treatment of pregnancy-related musculoskeletal conditions, including the Webster Technique, which is specifically designed to address pelvic alignment and reduce tension in the surrounding structures during pregnancy.
Treatment is adapted for each trimester and every stage of the bump.
How chiropractic care can help pregnancy-related pain
Pregnancy pain looks different for everyone
Our focus is simple: identify which joints and structures are under the most pressure as your body changes, and address the mechanical cause of the pain directly. Pregnancy creates predictable biomechanical changes. Understanding them tells us where to look. You might be experiencing:
- Lower back pain that builds through the day
- Pelvic girdle pain at the front or back of the pelvis
- Pain at the pubic symphysis when walking, climbing stairs or turning in bed
- Sciatica: pain travelling through the buttock and into the leg
- Hip pain that makes walking uncomfortable
- Upper back or rib discomfort as the chest expands
- Neck and shoulder tension
- Difficulty finding a comfortable sleeping position
When should you see a chiropractor during pregnancy?
You should see a chiropractor if:
- Back, pelvic or hip pain is affecting your sleep, movement or daily life
- You have been told to rest and accept it
- Pain has been building over several weeks
- Pelvic girdle pain is making walking, stairs or turning in bed difficult
- Sciatica has developed during pregnancy
- You want to be assessed and treated rather than waiting until after the birth
You don't have to wait until after the birth to feel better.

Pregnancy pain is the sleep that keeps breaking because there is no comfortable way to lie
Getting out of bed needing to happen in stages. The walk to the car that has become something you brace for. Turning over in bed waking you. The exercise or yoga that kept you well that you have had to stop. Dreading the night because the pain gets worse when you are still. Not being able to enjoy what should be an exciting time because the pain is always in the background.

Why our approach is different
Most people with pregnancy-related pain follow the same path. They mention it at a midwife appointment and are told it is normal. They try paracetamol. They get a support belt. They rest more. The pain continues, usually getting worse as the pregnancy progresses, and they wait for the birth.
There's a reason that sequence doesn't resolve pregnancy pain. Paracetamol reduces the pain signal. A support belt adds external stability. Rest reduces load temporarily. None of it addresses the specific joint or structure that is under pressure or changes the mechanics driving the pain.
Pregnancy pain is mechanical. The centre of gravity has shifted. The pelvis is less stable. The lumbar spine is under more load than it was before pregnancy. These are specific, addressable problems. Finding which joint is most affected and restoring its movement or stability directly is what produces lasting relief. What we're looking for:
- Which joints in the pelvis and lumbar spine are under the most stress
- How pelvic alignment has changed and what is driving the asymmetry
- Whether sciatica is present and at which level the nerve is being compressed
- What positions, movements and habits are loading the most affected structures
Pregnancy is not a reason to be in pain. It is a reason to get the right treatment.
