Postnatal chiropractic care in Bristol
Most women are told some version of the same thing: it's part of having a baby, give it time, it will settle. Some are referred for pelvic floor exercises. Very few are offered a mechanical assessment of the spine and pelvis, or told that what they are experiencing has a specific cause that can be directly treated.
Birth changes the mechanics of the pelvis and spine in specific, structural ways. The sacroiliac joints absorb the forces of delivery and frequently become restricted. Relaxin remains elevated during breastfeeding for months, keeping the joints in a state of reduced stability. Feeding positions hold the neck and upper back in sustained flexion for hours each day. These are specific, mechanical consequences, and at Willow, we assess and treat them directly.
Postnatal pain is the night feed that requires bracing before you stand. Getting on and off the floor to play that has become something you manage rather than do. The sense that asking for help is unreasonable when you have a newborn. It is not unreasonable. The pain is mechanical. It has a cause. It can be treated.

Evidence-based care for postnatal pain
Chiropractic care in the postnatal period is safe, gentle and well-evidenced. At Willow, our chiropractors are trained in the assessment and treatment of postnatal musculoskeletal conditions.
Treatment addresses the specific structural consequences of pregnancy and delivery: restricted sacroiliac joints, altered pelvic alignment, fascial tension from caesarean scar tissue, and the postural patterns that build up around feeding and carrying. Every approach is adapted to where you are in your recovery.
How chiropractic care can help postnatal pain
Postnatal pain looks different for everyone
Our focus is the same regardless of presentation: identify which joints and structures are most affected by the changes of pregnancy, delivery and the postnatal period, and address the mechanical cause of the pain directly. The pattern is predictable. The treatment is specific.
You might be experiencing:
- Pelvic girdle pain or sacroiliac joint pain that continued after the birth
- Lower back pain that is worse when lifting, carrying or getting up from the floor
- Pain at the pubic symphysis when walking, climbing stairs or getting in and out of the car
- Neck and upper back pain from sustained feeding and carrying positions
- Hip pain that has worsened since the birth
- Tightness or discomfort around a caesarean scar
- Thoracic or rib pain from the positions feeding requires
- Headaches related to neck and upper back tension
When should you see a chiropractor after birth?
You should see a chiropractor if:
- Pelvic girdle pain or lower back pain has continued beyond the birth
- Sacroiliac joint pain or SPD is still present weeks or months after delivery
- C-section recovery is feeling slower than expected, or the scar area feels tight
- Feeding and carrying are causing persistent neck, upper back or shoulder pain
- Hip pain is affecting how you lift, carry or walk
- You have been told to rest and wait, and it has not improved
- You want a clinical assessment of what is causing your pain rather than managing around it
The sooner postnatal pain is assessed and treated, the less time it has to become a fixed pattern.

Postnatal pain is the night feed that requires bracing before you stand
The car seat that you start to dread carrying. The feeding position aggravating your neck but is the only one that works. Getting on and off the floor to play becoming increasingly difficult. The sense that you can't ask for help when you have a newborn to be getting on with.
It is not unreasonable to ask for help. The pain is mechanical and it can be treated.

Why our approach is different
Most women with postnatal pain follow the same path. They mention it at a health visitor or GP appointment and are told it will settle. They try pain relief and rest. If it persists, they are told the pelvic floor needs time to recover. The pain continues, often becoming more established as the months pass, and they adjust around it.
There is a reason that sequence rarely resolves postnatal pain. Pain relief reduces the signal. Rest reduces the load temporarily. Pelvic floor work addresses one component of pelvic stability. None of it identifies the specific joint or structure that is restricted, or changes the mechanics driving the pain.
Postnatal pain is mechanical. The sacroiliac joints took the forces of delivery. The pelvis is still in a state of hormonal laxity. The upper spine has been loaded by weeks or months of feeding posture. These are specific, addressable problems. Finding which structures are most affected and restoring their movement directly is what produces lasting relief. What we're looking for:
- Which joints in the pelvis and lumbar spine are restricted or misaligned following delivery
- Whether caesarean scar tissue is affecting fascial tension or movement patterns
- How feeding and carrying posture is loading the cervical and thoracic spine
- What is maintaining the pattern and what needs to change
Having a baby is not a reason to be in pain. It is a reason to get the right assessment.
