Frozen shoulder treatment in Bristol that gets you moving again
Don't let a frozen shoulder set your limits
Frozen shoulder is the pain that wakes you at 3am and the morning stiffness that won't clear. The coat you can't put on, the shelf you can't reach, the things you've quietly stopped doing. The shoulder capsule inflames, thickens and scars and the joint locks. We find out what's driving it, assess it properly, and treat it directly. Appointments available today across 6 Bristol & South West locations.

Frozen shoulder treatment in Bristol
The shoulder capsule becomes inflamed, thickens and scars. As it tightens, it restricts movement in every direction. That is what separates frozen shoulder from other shoulder conditions: a rotator cuff injury limits specific movements. Frozen shoulder limits all of them. Reaching overhead, across your body, behind your back - all of it becomes painful, then impossible.
The condition moves through stages that can span one to three years. For many people, without the right intervention, full function never completely returns. Frozen shoulder is also widely misdiagnosed. Rotator cuff tears, bursitis and referred pain from a compressed nerve in the neck can all feel similar, and the treatment for each is entirely different.
At Willow, an accurate assessment is where we start. We identify what is actually causing the restriction, which stage you are in, and what treatment is appropriate at that point. That determines everything that follows.

Evidence-based care for frozen shoulder
Chiropractic is one of the most effective approaches for frozen shoulder. It addresses the pain, restores mobility progressively, and treats the surrounding structures that the shoulder has been loading differently while it's been locked.
At Willow, we combine thorough clinical assessment with targeted, specific treatment to find what's actually there and address it directly.
How chiropractic care can help frozen shoulder
Frozen shoulder looks different for everyone
Our focus is simple: establish exactly what's happening in the shoulder, treat the capsule and surrounding structures directly, and restore movement progressively. The approach matters, the capsule is inflamed, and forcing movement makes it worse. What works is precise, targeted treatment that reduces pain and builds range of motion without provoking the tissue further.
You might be experiencing:
- A deep, aching pain in the shoulder
- Pain that's worst at night and breaks your sleep
- Stiffness that's gradually getting worse
- Loss of movement in every direction, not just one
- Pain that flares with any arm movement
- Difficulty reaching overhead, behind your back, or across your body
When should you see a chiropractor for frozen shoulder?
You should consider seeing a chiropractor if:
- Your shoulder pain and stiffness has been building over weeks
- Pain is disturbing your sleep
- You've been told to wait it out and aren't satisfied with that answer
- Movement is restricted in more than one direction
- You've been told it's frozen shoulder but haven't had a thorough assessment
- You want to treat it properly, not manage it
The sooner treatment starts, the less the surrounding structures have to compensate and the less there is to unpick later.

Frozen shoulder is the 3am wake-up that won't settle
Getting dressed becoming an ordeal. Not being able to reach the top shelf, put a coat on, or do your hair without pain. Cutting out exercise, then sport, then the things that kept you moving. The shoulder you've started planning your day around.
What happens at your first frozen shoulder appointment?
Your first visit is a proper assessment, designed to answer the questions most people arrive with: what's actually happening in this shoulder, how far along is it, is this definitely frozen shoulder, and what can be done about it. You'll get:
- A detailed history and symptom review
- Orthopaedic testing to establish range of motion and identify the stage
- A thorough examination of the shoulder, neck and upper spine
- A postural assessment
- X-rays, if clinically required
- A clear diagnosis - not just a label, but an explanation of what's there
- Straight advice on whether we can help, and what the treatment plan looks like
For many patients, a proper assessment is the first time anyone has examined the shoulder thoroughly rather than simply confirming the diagnosis and advising patience.

Why our approach is different
By the time most people reach us, they've been through a familiar sequence. The GP confirmed frozen shoulder and advised waiting. Perhaps a steroid injection, which reduced the pain for a while before it returned. Maybe physio, which helped until the exercises started aggravating it. And the shoulder is still locked.
There's a reason that sequence doesn't resolve it. Waiting allows the capsule to continue scarring while the neck, upper back and opposite shoulder compensate for what the frozen shoulder can't do. Those patterns become established. Steroid injections reduce acute inflammation but don't address the capsule itself. And aggressive stretching of an inflamed capsule provokes it, which is why so many people find physio makes things worse before it makes them better.
The approach matters as much as the treatment. What we're looking for:
- Which stage of frozen shoulder you're in, because the right treatment changes at each stage
- How the neck and upper spine are loading differently around the restricted shoulder
- Whether the surrounding muscles have adapted to the locked joint
- Whether what you have is actually frozen shoulder, or a rotator cuff problem, bursitis, or referred pain from the neck presenting in the same way
Once we know exactly what's there, we treat it precisely, working with the stage the shoulder is in, not against it.
You don't have to keep working around it.
