Chronic pain & fibromyalgia
Chronic pain is not a diagnosis. It is a description. Fibromyalgia tells you what your experience is. It does not tell you what is driving it.
Most people with chronic pain follow a long and frustrating path. GP appointments, blood tests and scans that come back normal, a rheumatology referral, a diagnosis of fibromyalgia or chronic pain syndrome, medication to manage the symptoms, a referral to a pain clinic, advice on pacing. At no point in that pathway is a thorough mechanical assessment of the spine and joints typically carried out. At no point is anyone looking at what the structure is doing and whether it is contributing.
At Willow, we start there. Our chiropractors are experienced in chronic pain and fibromyalgia, and most patients who come to us have never had a hands-on assessment of how their spine and joints are actually moving. That assessment consistently tells us more than years of management has.

Evidence-based care for chronic pain
Research into chiropractic care for fibromyalgia and chronic musculoskeletal pain shows improvements in pain intensity, sleep quality and physical function following spinal manipulation and soft tissue treatment.
At Willow, we assess and treat the mechanical contributors to your overall pain load. For most chronic pain patients, that is the part of their treatment that has never been attempted, and the part that makes the most immediate difference to daily function.
How chiropractic care can help chronic pain and fibromyalgia
Chronic pain looks different for everyone
Our focus is consistent: identify the specific joints and structures that are restricted or under abnormal load, and address them directly. For chronic pain patients, the pattern is often more complex than in acute presentations, built up over years of compensation and secondary restriction. That makes a thorough assessment more important, not less. You might be experiencing:
- Widespread pain that moves or is difficult to locate precisely
- Persistent neck and shoulder pain and stiffness
- Lower back pain that has been present for months or years
- Pain that is worse in the morning and eases with movement
- Recurring headaches driven by neck and upper back tension
- Joint stiffness without a clear inflammatory cause
- Fatigue that is partly driven by the sustained physical effort of managing pain
- Sensitivity to touch or pressure in specific areas of the spine
When should you see a chiropractor for chronic pain?
You should see a chiropractor if:
- You have a fibromyalgia or chronic pain diagnosis but no mechanical assessment has been carried out
- Your treatment has been entirely medication-based with no structural component
- Pain is concentrated around the spine, neck, shoulders or hips
- You have been told scans are normal but have not had a hands-on clinical assessment of joint movement
- Morning stiffness, restricted movement or recurring headaches are part of your pain pattern
- You want to understand the mechanical side of what is driving your pain
A normal scan does not mean there is nothing to treat. It means there is nothing structurally damaged. Restriction and nerve irritation do not appear on a scan.

Chronic pain is taking an hour in the morning before you feel able to function
Planning everything around whether you will manage it. The medication that reduces the edge without changing anything. The appointments where you leave with the same information you arrived with. Never feeling that anyone has actually looked at what your body is doing structurally, or why. That is what we do.
What happens at your first appointment for chronic pain?
Your first visit is a full clinical assessment. For chronic pain patients, the history is particularly detailed: we need to understand the full pattern of your pain, what has been tried, what has and has not helped, and what effect the pain is having on your daily life. You'll get:
- A detailed history covering the onset, progression and full pattern of your pain
- A thorough examination of the spine, pelvis and peripheral joints
- Assessment of movement, restriction and areas of nerve sensitivity
- An honest explanation of what we find and what we can address
- A clear treatment plan with realistic expectations
- Treatment in the same session where appropriate

Why our approach is different
Most chronic pain patients have had extensive contact with healthcare. They have seen GPs, rheumatologists and pain specialists. They have had blood tests, scans and referrals. They have tried multiple medications. They have been through pain management programmes and heard about pacing, acceptance and psychological approaches to living with the pain.
What most have not had is a thorough, hands-on assessment of the spine and joints carried out by someone looking for what is mechanically restricted and why.
Medication manages the pain signal. Pacing reduces load temporarily. Psychological approaches change the relationship with pain. None of those things address restricted joints, ongoing nerve irritation or the structural patterns that feed a sensitised nervous system.
We do not claim chiropractic resolves fibromyalgia. We claim something more specific and more immediately useful: we assess the mechanical side of your pain, treat what is treatable, and reduce the structural load that is maintaining your symptoms. For most chronic pain patients, that is the part that has never been addressed. What we're looking for:
- Which spinal joints are restricted and generating ongoing nerve irritation
- Where compensatory patterns have created secondary restrictions throughout the body
- How long-standing tension and guarding are affecting posture and movement
- What is contributing mechanically to the total pain load
You have had the diagnosis. You deserve the assessment that comes with it.
