Hip and knee pain treatment in Bristol that tells you what's actually driving it
Pain in your hip or knee often starts somewhere else
Hip and knee pain is rarely a hip and knee problem. The knee follows instructions from the joints above and below it. When those joints aren't working properly, the knee compensates. Eventually, it starts to show. The same is true of the hip. We find what's driving the pain, not just where it is. Appointments available today across 6 Bristol & South West locations.

Hip & knee pain treatment in Bristol
Most people assume the pain is in the joint because the joint is the problem. The knee is a simple hinge. It follows the instructions it receives from the hip above and the ankle below.
When those forces are uneven, the knee absorbs the difference. Over time, that uneven loading produces pain, stiffness and the kind of gradual deterioration that gets labelled as wear and tear.
Wear and tear is a description. It isn't a cause.
Hip pain follows the same logic. The hip sits close to the lumbar spine and the sacroiliac joint, and pain in the hip is frequently coming from one of those structures rather than the hip itself. A scan may show changes in the joint. It won't always tell you why they are there.
At Willow, we find out why. We assess the full picture: the pelvis, the lumbar spine, the hip and the structures above and below the knee. We identify what is driving the uneven loading and treat it directly.

Evidence-based care for hip & knee pain
Chiropractic is one of the most researched approaches for musculoskeletal pain, and hip and knee pain responds particularly well when the cause is identified and treated directly.
At Willow, we combine thorough clinical assessment with targeted treatment to find what's driving your symptoms, not just manage them.
How chiropractic care can help hip & knee pain
Hip & knee pain looks different for everyone
Our focus is simple: find which joints aren't moving as they should, work out how that's loading your hip or knee unevenly, and take the pressure off. Because the source of the problem and the site of the pain are often not the same place. You might be experiencing:
- Pain walking up or down stairs
- Stiffness getting out of a chair or out of the car
- Aching that builds through the day
- Pain on the inside or outside of the knee
- A deep ache in the groin or hip
- Clicking or grinding in the joint
- A knee that feels unreliable or gives way
- Pain that flares after sitting for long periods
When should you see a chiropractor for hip & knee pain?
You should consider seeing a chiropractor if:
- Your pain has been there for more than a few weeks
- You've been told it's wear and tear and left without a clear explanation
- Painkillers are becoming a regular part of your day
- You're avoiding stairs, exercise, or walking any distance
- Physio or other treatment has helped temporarily but the pain keeps returning
- You want to understand what's actually driving it, not just manage it
The pain is in your hip or knee. The cause is worth finding.

Hip & knee pain is the walk you've started cutting short
The stairs you now think about before you take them. Getting out of a chair becomes something you brace for. The sport you've quietly dropped. The limp you hope people haven't noticed. The hip that wakes you at 3am and won't settle.
What happens at your first hip or knee appointment?
Your first visit is a proper assessment, designed to answer the questions most people arrive with: what's actually causing this, why did it start, is it going to get worse, and what can be done about it. You'll get:
- A detailed history and symptom review
- Orthopaedic and neurological testing
- A thorough examination of your spine, pelvis, hip and knee
- A postural and movement assessment
- X-rays, if clinically required
- Clear answers about what's going on
- Straight advice on whether we can help, and what to do next
For many patients, a clear diagnosis provides the answers that scans, GP appointments and pain management haven't.
91% of Willow patients feel better with regular chiropractic care.

Why our approach is different
By the time most people reach us, they've tried a few things. Painkillers, the GP, maybe physio or an injection. Some rest. A scan that showed wear and tear and not much else. Things improve for a while, and then the pain comes back. There's a reason for that. Everything tried so far was aimed at the joint. None of it addressed what's loading the joint unevenly in the first place.
Physio builds strength around the knee. But if the hip mechanics driving the problem haven't changed, the loading pattern hasn't changed either. The knee keeps taking more than its share, and the pain returns. Injections reduce inflammation in the joint. The inflammation comes back because the cause is still there.
The scan is worth addressing too. Imaging shows changes in a joint. It doesn't explain why those changes are there, or why you have pain on one side and not the other, or why it started when it did. Many people have significant wear and tear on imaging and no pain at all. The scan describes the joint. It doesn't diagnose the cause. What we're looking for:
- Which joints in your spine and pelvis aren't moving as they should
- Whether the hip is generating force properly, or passing the load elsewhere
- How your posture and movement patterns are distributing weight through your lower body
- Whether the problem in the joint is the cause, or the consequence
Once we understand what's actually driving it, we build a plan to change it. You don't have to keep planning your day around what your hip or knee will allow.
